Have you read the Swallows and Amazons book by Arthur Ransome or seen the film? We can take you on a canoe adventure to Peel Island and discover the island for yourself. It lies towards the southern end of Coniston Water. In the book and film, it is known as “Wild Cat Island” with it’s secret harbour, which you can access by canoe. This is the perfect adventure for Swallows and Amazon fans of all ages.
We will aim to get out of the canoes at “The Secret Harbour” and explore the island and see where Captain John, Mate of the Swallow Susan, Able Seaman Titty and The Ships Boy Roger set up their tents and played pirates. Whilst on the island you can enjoy a picnic (optional) and try and find the secret treasure that is hidden on the island (Geo Cache).
We will then canoe around the island giving you the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful picturesque views that surrounds the island and if you are feeling brave you can do the rock jump into the lake.
Having explored Wild Cat Island, found the treasure, canoed around the island and jumped in the lake, we will return trip to the mainland.
Our equipment is first class- Our Old Town Discovery 158 canoes are perfect for this type of adventure as they are spacious with plenty of storage space for refreshments and additional clothing etc. You will be kitted out with:
- A cag (a protective layer helping to keep you dry, trap heat and reduce wind chill)
- A paddle
- A buoyancy aid
- A waterproof bag to keep keys or valuable items safe.
We highly recommend bringing a camera as this is a real unique alfresco adventure!
Before heading off on the adventure to Wild Cat Island we will teach you some basic skills in canoeing to maximise the enjoyment of your experience.
