Caving in the Yorkshire Dales
Caving?! You must be joking! Maybe think again… Caving isn’t all about confined and wet spaces! There is something for everyone in the Yorkshire Dales and it’s home to some of the finest and most spectacular natural caves in the United Kingdom.
We offer caving experiences so you can step into a world that not many people have explored.
Did you know? More people have been up Mount Everest than down the depths of the deepest caves in Yorkshire! And that the temperature underground remains a constant 8 degrees Celsius.
How are caves formed?
Over hundreds of thousands of years carbonic acid which is made up of water and carbon dioxide; has slowly dissolved the Limestone creating the caves we see today. It has created a diverse underground landscape that features areas of amazing beauty and rock formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstone and moon milk which are made from calcite. There is also a chance to see ancient fossils.
How is Limestone formed?
The limestone was formed during the Carboniferous Period some 340 million years ago. Limestone is made up of dead sea creatures and coral. When the creatures died, their remains consisting mainly of calcium carbonate formed layers and then were compressed over a period of time to create the limestone we see today. Areas within the Yorkshire Dales are in places 200m (650ft) thick and has come from the warm seas close to the equator in South America.
We provide you with the following kit to make you not only look the part but to be safe and feel comfortable:
• Helmet
• Head torch (candles are optional)
• Caving over suit
• Caving belt
• Knee pads
• Wellies
On booking we will arrange a call with you so we can tailor the experience to suit your needs and we will send out a recommended kit list, along with joining instructions.
Caving in the Yorkshire Dales is a great adventure that can be enjoyed all year round and each experience is approximately three hours long and can be either a morning or afternoon. Our caving experiences are suitable for the ages of 7 upwards and for all shapes and sizes. So if you don’t want a tight squeeze, but a walk in the park (Cave), and you don’t want to be climbing, crawling, sliding in mud and water then there is still something for you. But if you do want short climbs, crawls sliding in mud and water then we can certainly cater for you too.
Caving is a great team building activity whilst being a good personal challenge activity. It is also a great educational trip for those studying geology. It’s also great fun for stag and hen groups and families visiting the Yorkshire Dales on holiday.

Something that didn't just involve L plates and booze so we decided to do the raft building experience and it was exactly what i wanted. We had so much fun. The staff were absolutely great.
